Annual Fishing Day For Kids

Every spring the Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell hosts about fifty pre-school kids from the North Fulton Child Development Center's low income day care facility at past president David Hall's private lake in the heart of Roswell, an Atlanta suburb. Instead of our regular noon meeting we spend a couple of hours cooking hot dogs, serving lunch and treating the kids to a variety of events. These included story telling, safety lectures and "Hands on" experiences with the Roswell city motorcycle police and, of course, catching fish in the lake.
This was a day of making memories that will last a lifetime (for us and the kids). The looks on their faces as they caught their first fish or climbed aboard two real police motorcycles were priceless. And, yes, they got to switch on the flashing lights and hit those siren buttons many times! The police also gave a safety lecture to each group of kids.
Sherry Binkley said that "David Hall apparently starved the fish because more fish - and bigger fish - were caught this year than ever before". One young boy even caught a large mouth bass measuring well over twelve inches (honest!). Of course, all the fish were returned to the lake to train for next year's outing. The majority of our club members participated in this event and most feel it is our best "meeting" of the year.
Roswell city motorcycle patrolmen gave the kids safety lectures (and let them run the lights and sirens too) at the recent annual fishing outing sponsored by the Historic Roswell club for local kids.
Past Georgia District Governor, Ron Jackson, and Roswell Mayor Jere Wood, both members of the Historic Roswell Club, look on as the kids enjoy playing on - and learning about - police motorcycles at the club's recent fishing event for local kids.
Historic Roswell Kiwanis member, Dan Herrema, holds up the biggest catch of the day at the club's annual fishing outing for local day center kids. It was a foot-long large mouth bass that this little boy will never forget.
