Historic Roswell Kiwanis
Meeting on 16 October 2008
Mr. Bill Jones of Cobb County and candidate for the 6th Congressional District was featured speaker at the Kiwanis Club of Historic Roswell on October 16, 2008.
In announcing his candidacy for the congressional seat, Mr. Jones said: "I truly believe that when it comes to politics, no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care. My being here today is another example of how much I care about our Nation, the great state of Georgia and all the people of the 6th Congressional District. "
"Voters in Georgia’s 6th District and everywhere in this country are ready for change and new leadership,” said Jones. “We are going through one of the nation’s most turbulent economic situations in 60 years. Soaring energy costs, collapsing home values and ever increasing healthcare costs are creating a level of economic insecurity and concern unprecedented in recent history.”
He continued, "Change is coming to Washington next year, and the people of the GA 6th are looking forward to that change. The upcoming election is not about the Right versus Left, or rich versus poor or young versus old. The election of 2008 is about the future versus the past. It is about pragmatic cooperation versus negative partisanship. And about hope and straight talk and proven experience, versus fear and sarcasm and ridicule. We can do better, we must do better and we will do better. "
Jones is a 1976 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, receiving his degree in international affairs. He served in numerous leadership positions as an officer and pilot during his 21-years of Air Force service, and was awarded the Air Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. “I have seen firsthand the dedication and sacrifices of our men and women in uniform,” Jones said. “Providing real support for all — whether on active duty, in the Guard, Reserves or a veteran — will be one of my highest priorities in Congress.”
During his 19-year career as a pilot for Delta Air Lines, Bill Jones served as a leader in management as well as in the pilot’s association making sure the skies are safe for both his passengers and for everyone who flies. In 2002, Bill received the Leather Helmet Award, the Delta Air Line Pilots Association’s highest award for contributions to Airline Safety.
Motivated by the impact of hurricane Katrina, Jones joined the American Red Cross in 2005 and is now an Assistant Captain, leading a response team of volunteers to provide immediate assistance to victims of fires, floods and tornados across Cobb and Cherokee Counties. He has been a resident of Cobb County for over 20 years; he and his wife have three daughters.
"I intend to win this seat,” said Jones. “Our country is seriously off-course. It’s going to take a steady hand, strong commitment and a bipartisian approach to find solutions that work for the people of the Georgia’s 6th District and all Americans.”
