Historic Roswell Kiwanis Reads Around The World!
In its 10th year, Read Around the World is a major ongoing service initiative of Historic Roswell Kiwanis to encourage literacy. Year-round, Kiwanians work to improve child literacy by providing increased access to books, participating in reading activities and by continuously promoting it for education and pleasure.
Roswell Kiwanians read to hundreds of youngsters during February at Child Development Association of North Fulton. Kiwanians concluded this special month by reading to students at Roswell North Elementary School during the Roswell Read-In, a mini-marathon of reading featuring city council members, Kiwanians and other city officials.
Children who grow up in homes where parents do not read, or have only marginal reading skills, often lack early exposure to reading. They do not have stories read to them by a parent. They do not see books or print materials in their homes. They often do not have parental help with school work.
As an organization dedicated to serving children, Historic Roswell Kiwanis understands the significance of reading and its impact on overall learning and personal development. Studies of individual families show that supporting literacy inside the home has a greater impact on student success than family income or education.
Educational research repeatedly has recognized the importance of introducing early learning and literacy, the value of reading for pleasure, and the need for adult role models. Access to books remains a key factor in children's reading achievement.
