On March 8, 2011, Historic Roswell Kiwanis concluded its participation in Kiwanis International's Read Around the World initiative.  Members of Historic Roswell Kiwanis read weekly at North Fulton Child Development Association and concluded its reading with the Roswell Read-in at Roswell North Elementary School, a mini-marathon of reading to an entire grade-level.

Between February 1 and March 2, Kiwanis clubs across the globe participated in local projects that addressed child literacy in fun and creative ways. Activities included everything from holding a book party to organizing a make-a-book day or staging a “Live with Literature” theater production.

Children who grow up in homes where parents do not read, or have only marginal reading skills, often lack early exposure to reading. They do not have stories read to them by a parent. They do not see books or print materials in their homes. They often do not have parental help with schoolwork.  As an    organization dedicated to serving the children, Historic Roswell Kiwanis understands the significance of reading and its impact on overall learning and personal development.    Studies of individual families show that supporting literacy inside the home has a greater impact on student success than family income or education.

Educational research repeatedly has recognized the importance of introducing early learning and literacy, the value  of  reading  for  pleasure,  and  the need for adult role models. Access to books  remains a key factor in children's reading achievement.

In its ninth year, Read Around the World is a major ongoing service initiative of Historic Roswell Kiwanis. Year-round, Kiwanians work to improve child literacy by providing increased access to books, participating in reading activities and by continuously promoting it for education and pleasure.
